The Most Popular Open Access Articles on eScholarship
What do the following have in common?
- An article on the oldest known marine turtle in the journal PaleoBios from the UC Museum of Paleontology
- A psychology paper on sleep, mood, health, and weight
- A working paper on the perceived impact of corporate social responsibility on consumer behavior
Yep. You’ve guessed it.
Each is on the Top 10 list of the most frequently read publications in eScholarship for 2015.
eScholarship is the UC’s open access publishing platform, which makes UC Berkeley’s scholarly output available to the general public and researchers worldwide, free of charge.
By the end of 2015, eScholarship featured 11,614 books, journals, working papers, and previously published works.
See what’s trending on this quarter’s Top 10 list.

DMPTool downtime Wednesday Feb. 3
The DMPTool will be unavailable on Wednesday Feb. 3, 2016 from 5:00 to 6:00pm (PST), due to scheduled maintenance. During this period users will not be able to log in or have access to their data management plans. We apologize for the inconvenience.
For questions about the DMPTool or about other data management tools and services available to UC Berkeley researchers, please see our Research Data Management page or contact researchdata@berkeley.edu.
Cambridge Structural Database
Established in 1965, the CSD is the world’s repository for small-molecule organic and metal-organic crystal structures. Containing over 800,000 entries from x-ray and neutron diffraction analyses and more than 50,000 new structures added every year, this unique database of accurate 3D structures has become an essential crystallography resource to scientists around the world.
The UC Berkeley Libraries provides access to both the WebCSD (no downloads needed) and the complete CSDS client system (download here).
Encyclopedia of Cell Biology
The Encyclopedia of Cell Biology is a new online reference covering molecular, organizational, functional, and systems cell biology, with an emphasis on higher eukaryotes. Among the topics covered:
- Nucleic acid and protein synthesis
- Imaging
- Cytoskeleton and motors
- Cellular immunology
- Stem cell biology
- Omics
- Computational cancer biology
The more than 280 articles include fully annotated figures and links to additional reading.
BIOBASE Proteome and HGMD
BIOBASE Proteome includes tools for gene set analysis and pathway visualization:
- search for individual gene, disease, and drug reports by name
- browse for sets of genes, diseases, and drugs which share a desired set of characteristics
- upload a list of genes and identify those characteristics which are statistically over-represented
- export annotated characteristics for a gene list
- build and visualize protein-protein networks, overlaid with disease and drug assignments
- annotate custom sequences
BIOBASE HGMD provides data on inherited human gene mutations that:
- are known to be associated with a particular gene or disease
- disrupt a splice donor or acceptor site, or
- result in a specific amino acid change.
Proteome/HGMD Workshops: Katherine Wendelsdorf, Ph.D., QIAGEN/BIOBASE Senior Scientist, will be presenting hands-on training workshops on Proteome and HGMD:
- Date: Thursday, October 29, 2015
- Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm (Proteome); 12:00 – 1:00 pm (HGMD)
- Location: Bioscience Library Training Room, 2189 VLSB
The workshops are open to all interested researchers. If you are interested in attending, please let us know.

New Database – Environment Complete
We’ve recently licensed a new EBSCOhost database, Environment Complete. Environment Complete indexes about 2500 periodicals (scholarly journals and magazines) and contains full-text for about 1100 titles covering a wide variety of environmental topics.
Environment Complete is a great first database to try for those new to researching environmental topics, and it can be useful for more advanced researchers, too.
How does Environment Complete compare to our other environment-themed databases?
- GreenFILE is a smaller database with a more narrow focus (human impact on the environment). GreenFILE is geared toward the general public, so unique content in GreenFILE may include older NGO reports and pamphlets, consumer-oriented magazines, etc.
- Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management (ES&PM) is larger than Environment Complete – it is a collection of numerous smaller databases that together index about 6000 titles. Thus for many searches, particularly for topics like pollution, remediation, and toxicology, you will get more results with ES&PM. Search results will include conference material, reports, and environmental impact statements, so ES&PM is good for searching the environmental ‘grey literature.’
If you have questions about these or other databases, please contact a librarian at bios-library@berkeley.edu or stop by and see us at the reference desk!
Science of Synthesis
For all those involved in designing organic chemistry synthetic routes, Science of Synthesis is a trusted and reliable source on the best synthetic methods available.
Check it out for authoritative full-text descriptions and experimental procedures that are immediately applicable in the lab. The methods are selected, reviewed and continually updated by approximately 1,750 experts.
DMPTool downtime Sunday March 15
