Professional Development: Quick-Learn Lessons from the CDC
Do you have 20 minutes or less for learning? Then here are a collection of public health-related learning products and activities for you! The CDC has also made these available on mobile devices so that you can access them on the go.
You can take epidemiology related lessons such as how to create a visual display of the onset of illness among cases associated with an outbreak, how to determine the outbreak’s likely mode of spread, and how to determine the likely period of exposure.
You can also listen to podcasts on bullying prevention, emerging infectious diseases, or melanoma surveillance in the US. Short videos are also available on topics for health care professionals such as teen pregnancy, public health preparedness, and a talk by Hans Rosling on data trends in global health and economics.
Professional Development: Free Online Courses for Those Working with Community Health
The Work Group for Community Health and Development at the University of Kansas has created the Community Tool Box. Here you’ll find lots of free materials such as online courses, toolkits, a training curriculum, and a database of best practices to support core skills in community work. These free online resources were developed for state and local health departments, hospital staff, community benefit programs, and community leaders and members.
The courses offered here will support your community health assessment and community health improvement work. The 8 courses are offered through TRAIN, a service of the Public Health Foundation. Free login required.

Professional Development: Ethics for Public Health Practice
The Southwest Regional Public Health Training Center is offering a new free online training that covers ethics for public health practitioners. Ethics for
Public Health Practice is based in part on the Associated Schools of Public Health’s Introduction to Ethics Modules. This training defines the dimensions of public health ethics, focuses on Applied Public Health Ethics, and explores frameworks for public health ethics that can help public health professionals make difficult decisions in their work. This training also examines the difference between research and public health practice.
The approximately one hour workshop is presented by Dr. Shira Shafir, assistant professor, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Ethics, Department of Epidemiology, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Dr. Shafir is the assistant director of the Center for Global and Immigrant Health and collaborates with the UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters.
This workshop is intended for those in the public health field, including those working with health departments, community organizations, health care institutions, health services programs, emergency medical services, law enforcement, humanitarian and other non-profit organizations, and other similar organizations. Upon finishing this course, a certificate of completion
can be downloaded.
