Topics covered will include:
1. How to navigate and browse for journal articles in
the OvidSP interface
2. Features of the OvidSP web site, including cited
reference searching and exporting Ovid records into
bibliographic management software (e.g., EndNote)
3. How to access articles online using a customized
version of PubMed, which links to the CDPH-licensed
full-text journals
4. Other full-text resources available to CDPH

Class Objective:
In this session you will learn how to easily locate and
obtain full text journal articles from OvidSP and PubMed
searches. You will also see how to find other relevant
articles by using the “Citing articles” feature of OvidSP.

These one-hour training sessions are free to CDPH employees.

Class: PubMed Advanced Hands-On
When: Wednesday, August 22, 2012, 10:30-12 pm
Where: CDPH Sacramento Campus, 1500 Capitol Ave, Enterprise Computer Training Room 72.169 (Turn left as you enter the building, and proceed through the double doors)

Class Objective: This class will teach you how to create more focused searches using MeSH and MeSH subheadings and quickly find “evidence-based medicine” utilizing PubMed’s pre-defined “evidence-based” queries.

It is highly recommended, but not required, that you have already taken the PubMed Basics class, or already have a basic understanding of and ability to search PubMed. This class will not cover what was covered in the PubMed Basics class.

Quantitative Methods in Clinical and Public Health Research class free this fall from HarvardX

PH207x: Health in Numbers: Quantitative Methods in Clinical and Public Health Research is an online class being offered this fall by a new enterprise called edX. This course has been adapted from the Harvard School of Public Health’s (HSPH) epidemiology and biostatistics classes. This course will cover the principles of biostatistics and epidemiology used for public health and clinical research. More details and directions on how to register are available online.  

edX, a new not-for-profit enterprise founded by MIT and Harvard University, offers free online learning to students around the world. In late July, UC Berkeley joined the consortium and will be offering two online classes this fall. These “X Universities” will offer interactive education to anyone with Internet access and will be using this platform to research how technologies can be used to facilitate effective teaching. A listing of all the classes offered is available at edX.


Immunization Strategies: Using the Evidence and What Works to Improve Practice

Immunization Strategies: Using the Evidence and What Works to Improve Practice will air August 22 at 2pm. It will consist of case studies, interviews with those utilizing best practices in the field, an expert panel discussion, and will end with a question and answer session from professionals across the country. Public Health Works, funded by the CDC, is a new training series designed for the public health workforce and health care personnel that want training on evidence-based strategies and quality improvement techniques.


New Website: Guide to NLM’s Mobile Resources

The National Library of Medicine has a new mobile website available to help you find its mobile resources and sites. You can search for resources in three ways: by type (website or application), by device (Android, Apple iOS, or BlackBerry), or by tags such as drugs, chemicals, articles, or many more. Each resource entry will have a brief description, descriptive tags, image, and a link to install the app or launch the web site. Why not check it out on your mobile device today!

SCP monthly update – June/July 2012

Read Adolfo Tarango’s latest SCP Update to find out what’s going on with the Shared Cataloging Program. Lots going on with EEBO (the Systems office is, reportedly, “aware of and will be coordinating EEBO record maintenance”). Other record sets of note: Springer and Wiley ebooks as well as IEEE and Knovel ebooks; as for serial records, highlights include American Periodical Series and JSTOR.
