Your Big Idea can win Big Money! CITRIS Competition now open

CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, is proud to announce the fifth annual CITRIS White Paper competition, which will give away $30K in cash prizes for the best ideas that demonstrate the ability of IT to address a major societal challenge. The IT for Society contest is open to students from all four CITRIS campuses: UC Berkeley, UC Merced, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Davis. The deadline this year is Friday, March 19 at 5:00 p.m. PST.

CITRIS is interested in stimulating new thinking on a broad range of social benefits of information technology.

The prizes will be distributed at a poster session in late April at which the finalists will present their projects.Details are available on the CITRIS Big Ideas web page. Links to information on past winners (which have included folks from SPH!) are also on this web page.


	

February 17th Sacramento Instruction Session: Food/Nutrition Resources

* Want to know the nutritive value of different kinds of foods, from broccoli to Big Macs?
* Need to know the latest on E. coli?
* Interested in how many fruits and vegetables Californians eat daily?
* Want to know about quality sources of food/nutrition information for consumers?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then please come to the Sheldon Margen Public Health Library’s Food/Nutrition Resources class!

Some of the topics that will be covered:
1. Using bibliographic databases such as Agricola to find journal articles on food and nutrition topics
2. Resources for finding the nutritive value of foods
3. Finding statistics on food consumption
4. Information on food safety and pesticides
5. Information for consumers or for developing consumer material

This class is intended for CDPH staff whose work requires knowledge of quality Internet resources on food/nutrition topics.

February 10th Richmond Instruction Session: Toxicological Resources

* Want to explore relationships between job tasks, exposure to toxic agents, and health effects?

* Want to know the potential toxic effects of the ingredients in common household products, from  shampoo to brake fluid?

* Interested in information on the releases of toxic chemicals in specific locations?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then please come to the Sheldon Margen Public Health Library’s Toxicological Resources class!

1. Using bibliographic databases such as PubMed, TOXLINE, and others to find journal articles on toxic substances
2. How to manipulate, save, or download search results
3. Job-related potential toxic exposures and their health effects
4. How to find out what’s in common household products
5. How to learn about toxic releases into the environment

Audience:
This class is intended for CDPH staff who are unfamiliar with toxicological resources, or who desire a refresher on finding basic toxicological information. 

Feel free to send some examples of real life questions you frequently get or need answers to. We’ll try and incorporate some of these into the class.
