Six new online encyclopedias – food, genetics, neuroscience, and more
Six new online encyclopedias are now available. You can read them online, search within them, and download or print sections of interest.
- Encyclopedia of Agriculture and Food Systems covers more than 200 topics within the themes of food systems and people, global agriculture and the environment, the science of agriculture, agricultural products, and agricultural production systems.
- Encyclopedia of Food Microbiology (Second Edition) covers genomics, food safety, DNA sequencing, E. coli, history of food microbiology, preservatives, irradiation of food, biophysical techniques, biosensors, genetic engineering, and more.
- Encyclopedia of Food Safety provides international expert information on food safety, nutrition, food science and technology, foodborne diseases, and hazards.
- Brenner’s Encyclopedia of Genetics (Second Edition) provides an overview of the genetics of organisms (bacteria, phages, fungi, plants, animals, humans) and includes relevant topics in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, evolution, and disease.
- Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences (Second Edition) offers an overview of neurological sciences, with entries covering the anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, genetics, toxicology, immunology, pathology, and development of the brain.
- Pathobiology of Human Disease covers structure and function of human tissues, molecular pathology, cell biology, genetics, and molecular biology, and includes text, images, movies, and animations.

Introducing PubAg
The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Library (NAL) recently introduced a new search engine for published research from the USDA, PubAg. PubAg is free to the public and designed to be easy to use.
PubAg provides full-text access to more than 40,000 scientific journal articles by USDA researchers, mostly from 1997 to 2014. It also indexes and searches citations of more than 300,000 peer-reviewed articles relevant to the agricultural sciences, with thousands more to be added in the next year. Similar to PubMed, PubAg utilizes special subject headings that are assigned to articles to enhance the search process.
Topics covered in PubAg include nutrition, food safety, food quality, animal and crop production and protection, natural resources, sustainable agricultural systems, rural development, agricultural economic and policy issues, agricultural imports and exports, agricultural statistics, and extension education. Since there are only journal articles in PubAg, use NAL’s other database, AGRICOLA, if you are looking for reports, books, and other material on these topics in addition to articles.
You won’t see UC-eLinks in PubAg, so if you find a citation in that doesn’t include full text, use the Citation Linker to see if full text is available at UC Berkeley.
