SIAM e-books now available

The UC Libraries recently purchased access to SIAM e-books, which includes perpetual access to all SIAM titles for 2011 plus the complete backlist of nearly 400 titles. These e-books cover a broad range of topics in applied mathematics, computational science, and engineering. Nearly 200 titles are currently available online, the remaining backlist titles should be available soon, and 2011 titles will be added as they are published.

Links to individual books will eventually be loaded into our catalog so you can find them in OskiCat and Melvyl.

Equitrac copy cards extended through August 31

The library has negotiated a contract extension that will extend the use of Equitrac cards through August 31, 2011 (not June 30 as previously announced).

As part of a transition in vendors for the library’s copying and computer printing services, the Equitrac “copy cards” that have been in use for several years will be honored only until August 31, 2011. Any unused value on the Equitrac cards will be lost after that date. Refunds of unused value will not be available.

For anyone purchasing or adding value to an Equitrac card between now and August 31, we recommend getting only the value that can be reasonably used during that time.

Another option is to use a Cal 1 Card. Currently, this can be done on designated copiers and printers on the second floor of Doe Library, the entrance level of Moffitt Library, and the Bioscience & Natural Resources Library.

Starting September 1, the Cal 1 Card will be used for copying and printing throughout the libraries.  For those not affiliated with UC Berkeley, we are developing a guest card.

This change is part of a larger transition in which the UC San Francisco Documents, Media & Mail office, in partnership with the UC Berkeley Library, is managing the copy centers in the Moffitt Library and the Bioscience & Natural Resources Library, and expanding the services available. Website and catalog downtime June 12 (update)

The library website, the OskiCat catalog, and many other online systems will be down during campus electrical work from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 12.

Affected systems include:

You can continue to search Next Generation Melvyl during this time, though it will not show current status information for UC Berkeley items and the Request button will not function.

For more information about campuswide impacts, please see Data Center Power Outage.

Update: It was initially reported that the proxy server would be unavailable. In fact, the proxy server will be available for off-campus access during the Data Center power outage. However, if you have any problems with it, you may use the campus VPN (Library VPN option) instead.

Science IM reference hours reduced April 11-May 13

Due to special projects and other staff committments, our popular science IM reference service will have reduced hours the rest of the semester: Monday-Friday 2:00-4:00 p.m. Summer and fall semester hours will be updated soon.

The collaborative 24/7 Ask a Librarian service will still be available. Ask a Librarian is a chat reference service that connects you to a librarian and emails you a transcript of your chat so you can reference it later.

Springer Open Access pilot ends

The UC-Springer Open Access Pilot ended March 1, 2011. During the two-year pilot negotiated between the California Digital Library (CDL) and Springer, UC-authored articles accepted for publication in 2009 and 2010 were published as open access under Springer’s Open Choice program. Please see Reshaping Scholarly Communication: News & Issues for more information.

UC Berkeley authors wishing to make their Springer articles open access can choose to pay Springer’s standard article publication fee or submit their work to one of Springer’s new open access journals published under the SpringerOpen imprint, which offers discounted fees. Authors may also wish to consider other open access venues for disseminating their work. Funding is available through the Berkeley Research Impact Initiative (BRII) to help cover up to $3,000 in open access publishing fees and up to $1,500 in paid access publishing fees per article.

Current Index to Statistics

Current Index to Statistics search interface

Current Index to Statistics (CIS) is an index to publications in statistics, probability, and related fields from 1975 to the present. Published by the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, this database indexes the entire contents of over 160 core statistics journals, selected articles from another 1,200 journals in related fields, and about 11,000 books and proceedings.

Tips:

  • CIS searches for keywords as a phrase. To look for your keywords anywhere, use the plus sign (e.g., +upper +limit).
  • UC-eLinks is not available in CIS. When you find an interesting publication, search for the journal title or book title in OskiCat or our Electronic Journals A-Z.

AGU Digital Library access restored

We are currently experiencing problems with our online access to American Geophysical Union (AGU) journals. Library users have reported problems accessing journal volumes from 2011 and from the backfile prior to 1996. It appears that we can still access articles from 1996-2010. The problem has been reported, and we hope it will be resolved soon.

Update: as of 3/29, access to AGU journals has been restored.

Science IM reference unavailable during spring recess

Our popular science IM reference service will be unavailable during spring recess, March 21-25. Normal semester hours will resume on Monday, March 28.

The collaborative 24/7 Ask a Librarian service will still be available. Ask a Librarian is a chat reference service that connects you to a librarian and emails you a transcript of your chat so you can reference it later.
