* Are you interested in keeping track of searches run and citations viewed during the previous 6 months?

Topics covered will include:
1. How to register for a My NCBI account
2. How to save searches and have PubMed periodically re-run the search
and automatically e-mail you new citations
3. How to permanently save and share citations in My NCBI
4. How to set up search filters in PubMed, so search results are sorted into your desired categories (e.g., age groups, citations that link to other databases, etc.)
5. Other features of My NCBI

Having difficulty finding the health statistics or data that you need?

Do you want to know where to look for the answers for the following questions?

–How many people in Sacramento County have been vaccinated for flu?

–What percentage of the population of Contra Costa County is African American?

–How do I find health status reports for California counties?

–How can I get raw data from a national survey that describes nutritional and behavioral factors associated with mortality?

–How can I find data to download and save?

If you want the answers to any of these questions, then please come to the Sheldon Margen Public Health Library’s Health Statistics and Data Resources class!

PubMed is the primary literature database for most topics in public health. The database comes from the National Library of Medicine. This class will teach you the basic skills needed to search PubMed to identify and obtain the most relevant information you need to perform your job. The skills you learn will save you time by allowing you to search PubMed in a more efficient and effective manner.

Class Objective:
In this class you will learn the basics of topic formulation, and how a database index (a set of subject terms, such as PubMed’s MeSH) works. You will also learn about databases to search besides PubMed, including sources of systematic reviews, and of “grey literature.” Also covered will be how to critically evaluate what you find from your searches.

It is recommended, but not required, that you have some experience or familiarity with searching PubMed.

* Are you interested in learning about databases besides PubMed where you can find articles and more?

* Want to know about sources of systematic reviews and grey literature?

* Want to practice using these databases with some hands-on exercises?

* Do you want to know how to search databases more effectively by using index terms (aka subject terms, thesaurus terms, descriptors)?

Class Objective:
You will be introduced to the library and information services available to you in this session. You will see how to easily locate and obtain full text journal articles from OvidSP, from PubMed searches, and from other sources. You will learn how to find other relevant articles by using the “Citing articles” feature of OvidSP and how to add these citations into your EndNote library. This class will show you how Use of the library services will help you identify and obtain the information needed to complete your work in a timely fashion.

This class is intended for CDPH staff who are already using the EndNote software program, and who wish to learn more advanced features (see class description above). Users of any version of EndNote are welcome to attend. The EndNote X7 software will not be distributed at this class; in order for you to use this software for your work, you or your CDPH unit must purchase or already own it.

Prerequisite:
It is recommended that you have already attended the Public Health Library?s EndNote X7 Basics Hands-on class, or are familiar with the basics of using EndNote. Basic EndNote material will not be covered in this session.

– Add citations to a Word document, and automatically format the bibliography and notes in any of thousands of styles
