The Cochrane Library: Finding the Evidence
The Cochrane Library contains several health-related databases, and is best known for its publication of systematic reviews of evidence of the effectiveness of health care interventions, such as drugs or surgery. The systematic reviews contain high-quality, independent evidence, aimed at informing healthcare decision-making. Reviews are prepared by subject-specific Review Groups that are part of the Cochrane Collaboration. Of special note are the plain language summaries contained in every systematic review, aimed at summarizing the reviews in a straightforward style that can be understood by healthcare consumers. The Cochrane Library may be searched, or browsed by topic and review group. Topics of special interest, for example, metastatic breast cancer, are highlighted on The Cochrane Library home page, and many resources on those topics are gathered together in Special Collections. Podcasts containing audio summaries of selected reviews are also available.
MathWorld: free online math encyclopedia
MathWorld is a free, extensive, and reliable online encyclopedia of mathematics. As it says on the website, it is supported by Wolfram Research, and it has been “created, developed, and nurtured by Eric Weisstein with contributions from the world’s mathematical community.”
Have a question about Bessel functions? Need some background on Hilbert’s Problems? Looking for the Neyman-Pearson Lemma? Give MathWorld a try! You can search or browse for information, and entries include references to books and journal articles so you can follow up for more information.
Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center
Detail from satellite imagery supplied by the EROS Data Center
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) collects and makes freely available a vast array of earth sciences data that range from aerial photography to satellite imagery, digitized maps to digital elevation models of areas around the globe. The data are available through the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center.
Use the Find Data page for access to specific data types, such as land cover data, as well as data discovery tools like EarthExplorer, which allows for combined text and geographic searching. Other search portals are linked from this site as well.
Users are required to register in order to download data. Search results are presented from a variety of sources, depending on the resources sought. Large satellite images and other large files can incur long wait times for downloading, but all data are free and available for reuse.
Natural Standard
Peer-reviewed research on alternative therapies such as herbs and functional foods can be difficult to find. These therapies are of interest to many Berkeley students, faculty, and staff for a number of reasons. Some are seeking information in order to make personal health decisions. Others are looking for evidence-based research related to their own research in fields such as medical ethnobotany, sports medicine, toxicology, nutrition, or other public health research areas.
The Natural Standard collection of databases provides high quality, evidence-based information about complementary and alternative health therapies, such as herbs, acupuncture, and dietary supplements.
Evidence-based and peer-reviewed research is aggregated and synthesized into easy-to-use databases and interactive tools. Natural Standard is a full-text source, and contains additional references to the primary literature.
Information compiled from: Natural Standard User’s Guide (PDF).
Global Health database (EBSCO)
Does your research require that you find material from or about other countries?
Global Health contains information from over 3500 journals, plus reports, books, book chapters, conference proceedings, patents, theses and electronic only publications from more than 150 countries going back to 1973. Global Health contains over 1.2 million scientific records, and more than 90,000 records are added each year. Over 95% of these records include an abstract.
A significant proportion of this material is unique to Global Health, meaning that you will not find it in PubMed and other databases. Global Health coverage includes the following subjects: International health, biomedical life sciences, communicable and non-communicable diseases, public health nutrition, food safety and hygiene, occupational health, toxicology, health services, and maternal/child health. This database offers global coverage with items in over 50 languages translated into English.
AccessMedicine – Updated Monthly
AccessMedicine is a multi-faceted resource. In addition to its focused resources in clinical medicine, including Harrison’s Online, a major medical resource, access is provided to textbooks in many basic biomedical sciences: anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, biostatistics, microbiology, neurosciences, and more. AccessMedicine contains thousands of images and illustrations; audio and video resources, arranged by body system; consumer health information and health news. This resource is updated monthly. By signing up for a free My AccessMedicine account, you can download content and podcasts to handheld devices.
Project Euclid continues to grow
Project Euclid, an online collection of mathematics and statistics resources, continues to add new content. In addition to Duke Mathematical Journal and Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, new journals include the Illinois Journal of Mathematics and Kyoto Journal of Mathematics. Project Euclid continues to host journals published by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
Project Euclid is also adding historical monograph content, including the Berkeley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability, the Notre Dame Mathematical Lectures, and the Cornell University Library Historical Math Monographs collection. About 70% of the journal and monograph content in Project Euclid is open access.
