arXiv~
arXiv.org, a UC Berkeley Library supported resource, is an open access, moderated repository for scholarly articles in the scientific disciplines of physics, mathematics, computer science, nonlinear sciences, quantitative biology, and statistics. When arXiv was started in 1991 at LANL, it was a precursor to the open access movement. arXiv supplements the traditional publication system by providing immediate dissemination and open access to scholarly articles.
arXiv is an e-print server, updated daily and includes more than 700,000 e-prints. Articles are reviewed by expert moderators who verify the content of the articles. (An e-print or pre-print is a digital version of a research document, posted online before final publishing.)
arXiv is operated and maintained by Cornell University Library, with a commitment to perpetual availability of submissions.
Natural Standard: The Authority on Integrative Medicine
Natural Standard is an international research collaboration that aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative medical therapies, such as herbs and dietary supplements. Information presented is evidence-based, consensus-based, and peer reviewed. Natural Standard is a full-text source, and contains references to the primary literature. The quality of available scientific evidence for each entry on the use of a therapy for specific medical conditions is graded A to F (strong positive to strong negative evidence). Natural Standard also includes a variety of tools, such as nutrition labels and calculators, and interaction checkers.
MAA Reviews free trial
The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is currently running a free trial of MAA Reviews, its excellent source for reviews of recent mathematics books. Eight new book reviews are posted each week, and there are currently over 3,000 reviews. You can also search for books that have been recommended on the Basic Library List. Next time you want a recommendation for a good introductory book on abstract algebra or differential equations, give the Basic Library List a try. The 1991 Basic Library List is always freely available.
NCBI’s Nucleotide database
The Nucleotide database is one of three major NCBI databases containing nucleotide sequence data. It contains sequences from the following sources:
- The International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC, which includes NCBI’s GenBank, the Nucleotide Archive of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and the DNA Databank of Japan (DDBJ)): a repository containing primary sequence data directly sequenced and submitted by researchers;
- Reference Sequences (RefSeq): a NCBI-curated collection of non-redundant sequences for major organisms which are derived from primary GenBank data and annotated by domain experts;
- Third Party Annotation (TPA) Sequence Database: a database of submitter-annotated sequences assembled or derived from primary INSDC data;
- Protein Data Bank (PDB): an archive of 3-D structural data for biological macromolecules from which nucleotide sequence data is extracted.
The Nucleotide database automatically maps keyword queries to NCBI’s taxonomic organism classification system, and provides a breakdown of the search results by species. Searches can be limited to a single species using the [Organism] field tag. Filters can also be applied for bacteria, INSDC/GenBank records, mRNA, and RefSeq records. Limits include date, source database, gene location, molecule and sequence types. As with other NCBI resources, My NCBI allows you to save Nucleotide searches, create e-mail alerts, and set up preferences for displaying and filtering search results.
SafetyLit: Injury prevention literature database
SafetyLit “provides abstracts of reports from researchers who work in more than 30 professional disciplines relevant to preventing unintentional injuries, violence, and self-harm. Among these are anthropology, economics, education, engineering specialties, ergonomics and human factors, health and medicine, law and law enforcement, psychology, sociology, and other fields.”
SafetyLit regularly hand-examines “more than 3400 current scholarly journals from many nations to find relevant material. This information is maintained in a searchable database that contains more than 280,000 items. The database contains articles from 5729 journals that are not included in PubMed/Medline.” You can sign up for the weekly SafetyLit Update Bulletin for current abstracts to be sent to you.
Handbook of Nanophysics
Nanophysics? Nanophysics combines aspects of fundamental & applied physics at the nanoscale. The Handbook of Nanophysics, a peer-reviewed seven-volume set, is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of this growing field. Volumes 1-4 cover theory, methods & materials; volumes 5-7 include structures & applications. All of the volumes incorporate plenty of supporting graphics & explanations for advanced students and researchers. Chapters include “The Quantum Nature of Nanoscience” by UC Berkeley Faculty member, Marvin L. Cohen. Edited by Klaus D. Sattler.
Encyclopedia of the Eye
The Encyclopedia of the Eye is targeted toward scientists looking for information that is outside of their fields of expertise, and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in eye research. Each article in the Encyclopedia, in addition to text, includes many multimedia and color figures, to help illustrate the points discussed. More in-depth information is available through extensive references and related articles. The Encyclopedia includes many introductory articles appropriate for undergraduate students as well as those in-depth in specialist research areas. The links to related reference works and related articles take the user to articles in the publisher’s other encyclopedias and journal publications, and in many cases, to the full text.
Current Index to Statistics
Current Index to Statistics (CIS) is an index to publications in statistics, probability, and related fields from 1975 to the present. Published by the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, this database indexes the entire contents of over 160 core statistics journals, selected articles from another 1,200 journals in related fields, and about 11,000 books and proceedings.
Tips:
- CIS searches for keywords as a phrase. To look for your keywords anywhere, use the plus sign (e.g., +upper +limit).
- UC-eLinks is not available in CIS. When you find an interesting publication, search for the journal title or book title in OskiCat or our Electronic Journals A-Z.
Physical chemical data online – NIST/TRC WTT
The NIST/TRC Web Thermo Tables (WTT) Professional Edition is an online database of critically evaluated thermochemical properties. There are two versions of the database, the Professional (with all the data) and the Lite (with 150 selected commonly used compounds). We subscribe to the Professional version.
Presently, the Professional version of WTT contains data for 7729 compounds. Data includes critical properties, vapor pressures and boiling temperatures, phase transition properties, volumetric properties, heat capacities and derived properties, transport properties, reaction state-change properties, as well as index of refraction, surface tension, and speed of sound. Various search options and interactive data plotting capabilities are provided via the web interface.
This is a subscription database (not the same as the freely available NIST Chemistry WebBook). The two products are complementary however, and each one has internal links to the other.
