DMPTool downtime Wednesday July 15

DMPTool2

The DMPTool will be unavailable from Wednesday July 15, 2015 at 5:00pm through Thursday, July 16 at 2:00am (PDT), due to scheduled maintenance. During this period users will not be able to log in or have access to their data management plans. We apologize for the inconvenience.

For questions about the DMPTool or about other data management tools and services available to UC Berkeley researchers, please see our page on Scientific Data Services or contact data-consult@lists.berkeley.edu.

Resource Trial – Crop Protection Compendium

The Library has trial access to Crop Protection Compendium (CPC) through May 15. CPC is a tool that compiles and presents scientific information on all aspects of global crop protection by integrating text, images, maps, and databases in a convenient portal.

CRC contains more than 26,000 datasheets and 3,500 detailed datasheets on crop pests, diseases, weeds, invasive plants, and natural enemies, as well as over 200 detailed crop datasheets. CPC also includes full text of over 25,000 relevant journal and conference articles.

Please give CPC a try before May 15 and let us know what you think!

New Database – Environment Complete

Environment Complete

We’ve recently licensed a new EBSCOhost database, Environment Complete. Environment Complete indexes about 2500 periodicals (scholarly journals and magazines) and contains full-text for about 1100 titles covering a wide variety of environmental topics.

Environment Complete is a great first database to try for those new to researching environmental topics, and it can be useful for more advanced researchers, too.

How does Environment Complete compare to our other environment-themed databases?

  • GreenFILE is a smaller database with a more narrow focus (human impact on the environment). GreenFILE is geared toward the general public, so unique content in GreenFILE may include older NGO reports and pamphlets, consumer-oriented magazines, etc.
  • Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management (ES&PM) is larger than Environment Complete – it is a collection of numerous smaller databases that together index about 6000 titles. Thus for many searches, particularly for topics like pollution, remediation, and toxicology, you will get more results with ES&PM. Search results will include conference material, reports, and environmental impact statements, so ES&PM is good for searching the environmental ‘grey literature.’

If you have questions about these or other databases, please contact a librarian at bios-library@berkeley.edu or stop by and see us at the reference desk!

Daniel Feldman receives Distinguished Teaching Award

Daniel Feldman

Daniel Feldman, Associate Professor of Neurobiology in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology and the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, has been named one of five recipients of the 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award. The award, administered by the Academic Senate Committee on Teaching, is UC Berkeley’s highest honor for excellence in teaching.

Professor Feldman and the other Distinguished Teaching Award recipients will be honored at a public ceremony in Zellerbach Playhouse on Tuesday, April 21, at 5 pm. For more information on the award and its past and present honorees, please see the DTA announcement page of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Introducing PubAg

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Library (NAL) recently introduced a new search engine for published research from the USDA, PubAg. PubAg is free to the public and designed to be easy to use.

PubAg provides full-text access to more than 40,000 scientific journal articles by USDA researchers, mostly from 1997 to 2014. It also indexes and searches citations of more than 300,000 peer-reviewed articles relevant to the agricultural sciences, with thousands more to be added in the next year. Similar to PubMed, PubAg utilizes special subject headings that are assigned to articles to enhance the search process.

Topics covered in PubAg include nutrition, food safety, food quality, animal and crop production and protection, natural resources, sustainable agricultural systems, rural development, agricultural economic and policy issues, agricultural imports and exports, agricultural statistics, and extension education. Since there are only journal articles in PubAg, use NAL’s other database, AGRICOLA, if you are looking for reports, books, and other material on these topics in addition to articles.

You won’t see UC-eLinks in PubAg, so if you find a citation in that doesn’t include full text, use the Citation Linker to see if full text is available at UC Berkeley.
