Website and catalog downtime October 6

The library website, the OskiCat catalog, and many other online systems will be down from 4am to 7am on Thursday October 6.

Affected systems include:

  • Library proxy server and other services requiring CalNet login.
  • Library websites
    • Library Web (www.lib.berkeley.edu)

    • The Bancroft Library website (bancroft.berkeley.edu)
    • Summer Reading List (reading.berkeley.edu)
    • Mark Twain Project Online (www.marktwainproject.org & marktwainproject.org)
    • Moffitt Library renovation (moffitt.berkeley.edu)
    • Mets Viewer (metsviewer.lib.berkeley.edu)
    • Digital collections (dpg.lib.berkeley.edu)

During this time, Melvyl, the UC-wide and worldwide library catalog, will still be operating, though it will not show current status information for UC Berkeley items, and the Request button will not be working.

* You can limit any search in Google to a particular domain (such as .gov or .org) or even a web site?

* What exactly is and is not included in Google search products?

* You can import citations directly from Google Scholar into EndNote or Reference Manager?

* You can search for citing citations in Google Scholar?

* You can limit Google Scholar searches by year, subject area, and more?

* Google Books allows you to read or preview books online?

If you answered “No” to any of these questions, then please come to the Sheldon Margen Public Health Library’s Google, Google Scholar, Google Books and WorldCat class!

Topics covered will include:
1. Google search products: what’s in them?
2. Search tips
3. Setting Preferences, using Advanced Search
4. Cited reference searching
5. Shortcomings of using Google for research
6. Other sources of free, online books

Class: Google, Google Scholar, Google Books, and WorldCat
When: Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 10-11 am
Where: CDPH Richmond Campus, Room C-140

Class Objective:
This class will teach participants skills to efficiently and effectively search Google, Google Scholar, Google Books and WorldCat to retrieve relevant information and literature for their jobs.

Audience:
This class is intended for CDPH staff whose work requires more effective Internet searching, and finding articles and books on work-related topics.

Supervisors: Please encourage your staff to attend, if appropriate.

These one-hour training sessions are free to CDPH employees. Please obtain your supervisor’s approval to attend.

Art History/Classics Library closure

Date changed: The Art History/Classics Library is closed until Thursday October 13, while major maintenance work is done on the Doe Library building.

During the closure, OskiCat users can request that materials be paged for their use by clicking on the Art History/Classics location link or by following the instructions on this page.

Also during this time, Art History/Classics course reserves will be available at the Moffitt Library circulation desk.
