Trial of Seans Digital Archive (Film Studies Journal) through 11 February 2022
UC Berkeley Library has set up a trial of Seans Digital Archive (1990-2020). Seans is a well-known Russian journal dedicated to Film Studies. The UC Berkeley’s registered students, staff, and faculty can access the digital archive here. The trial will last from 12 January 2022 through 11 February 2022. The vendor description: The Seans digital archive contains all available published issues from 1990, with an additional year’s worth of content added annually. The archive offers scholars the most comprehensive collection available for this title and features full page-level digitization and complete original graphics. The archive has searchable text and is cross-searchable with numerous other East View digital resources.
Each issue of Seans is devoted to a specific theme. Examples of past themes include:
- Based on true events (Основан на реальных событиях)
- Back in the USSR
- Sources of the impossible (Источники невозможного)
- Speak, Memory
- It’s sad (Это печально)
- Everything is going according to plan (Все идет по плану)
- Faust
- Le tour de France

Alternatively, the Seans Digital Archive is also available on the web at no cost here: https://seance.ru/magazine/
However, the archive that is on the web is not cross-searchable with other digital content that Eastview offers.
Trial access to Classiques Garnier Numérique
The UC Berkeley Library has set up a 60-day trail to all ebook collections and ejournals published by Classiques Garnier Numérique in Paris. Several years ago, the Library purchased perpetual access to several of its databases including Grand Corpus des dictionnaires [du 9e au 20e siècle], Grand Corpus des grammaires françaises, des remarques et des traités sur la langue (XIVe-XVIIe s.), and Corpus Montaigne but not yet to any of the ejournals or ebook collections.
Since 1896, Éditions Classiques Garnier has been publishing literary works from around the world, French and foreign, ancient and modern, in reference editions. In 2009, under the editorial direction of Claude Blum, the independent publishing house expanded the scope of its publications to all areas relating to literature and social sciences: editing studies and essays in the leading fields in French and foreign literature, linguistics, history, art, music, law, economics and social sciences. The quantity of the signature yellow-bound paperback books in Berkeley’s collection is extensive. The journals we currently subscribe to in print include La Lettre clandestine, Revue d’Histoire et de Philosophie religieuses, Cahiers Octave Mirbeau, Revue Nerval, Bulletin de la Société Paul Claudel, and Constellation Cendrars. Ten of their journals, including Revue d’histoire littéraire de la France, are partially archived in JSTOR but not all available to UCB.
Access to more of the digital content from this publisher would greatly enhance our electronic holdings and expand the accessibility of content in French. Please give it a try before January 15, 2022 and let me know if you’d like to recommend any titles or collections we might put on our wish-list.

Trial: Arte Público Press Databases (EBSCO)- Ending on October 31, 2020
We are glad to announce that the UC Berkeley Library has started trials of Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection: Series 1 and Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection: Series 2 that have been hosted by EBSCO. (Please click on the hyperlinks above to access the resources).

EBSCO’s Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection is an archive of publications focused exclusively on U.S. Hispanic history, literature and culture from colonial times until 1960. Available in two series, Series 1 focuses on the creative life of U.S. Latinos and Hispanics. Content is written, indexed and searchable in Spanish and English.
Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection: Series 2
Arte Público Hispanic Historical Collection is an archive of publications focused exclusively on U.S. Hispanic history, literature and culture from colonial times until 1960. Available in two series, Series 2 focuses on Hispanic American civil rights, religion and women’s rights from the 18th through the 20th century. Content is written, indexed and searchable in Spanish and English.

Since April 15, the UC Berkeley academic community has had access to a 60-day trial of RetroNews. While much of this historical French language news collection is freely available through Gallica, the advanced functionality and added content is only available to subscribers. An initiative of BnF-Partenariats, which is a subsidiary of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), RetroNews aims to increase the digitization of its paper press collections which are increasingly at risk of serious damage over time. To explore all of its features, it is necessary to create an account (s’inscrire) after authenticating with your CalNet ID.

RetroNews, which is the French national library’s platform dedicated to historical printed press, offers a vast online archive of French and francophone periodicals. The collection features over 600 newspapers, journals, magazines and reviews, published between 1631 and 1950: the most important titles of the daily press (Le Petit Parisien, Le Journal, Le Matin) but also periodicals of the political spectrum, regional publications and satirical magazines.

Brazilian cinema gained international acclaim through the Cinema Novo of Glauber Rocha, Nelson Pereira dos Santos and other directors in the 1960s. Yet Brazil produced numerous films throughout its various regions since as early as 1896. Until now, a proper appreciation of early Brazilian cinema has been hampered by the loss of a significant number of the films, as well as a lack of available printed sources pertaining to Brazil’s movie industry.”

Trial of Art & Architecture ePortal
UC Berkeley has a trial subscription to the ‘Yale Art and Architecture ePortal‘ through July 22, 2020. The portal includes access to eBook versions of many publications on art and architecture from Yale University Press and beyond. The site can be accessed from a campus IP address or through the VPN at: https://www.aaeportal.com

Trial of Slavi︠a︡ne Digital Archive through May 31, 2020!
The Library has set up a trial of an Anti-fascist Soviet propaganda journal from the WWII era Russian journal, Slavi︠a︡ne that will go through May 31, 2020. The text of the journal’s program that was sent to Stalin in 1942 can be found here.

A brief description of the resource from Eastview is below: “Founded in 1942 at the height of the Great Patriotic War by the All-Slavic Committee, a Soviet anti-fascist organization, Slaviane (Slavs) was a monthly magazine that saw its mission as one of “rallying Slavic peoples together in alliance with all freedom-loving peoples to fight against Nazi Germany and its vassals.” The editors sought to achieve their main goal by exposing the “predatory and rapacious policies of Hitlerites, their hate-filled program aimed at the elimination of Slavic peoples and their centuries-old culture,” as the magazine’s mission statement put it.”
