Laptop checkouts at Engineering Library
MacBook Air laptops are now available for lending at the Engineering Library. Students may check out laptops for four hours plus one renewal – long enough to finish that paper, use for a class presentation, or watch a few movies!
Laptops run Windows or OSX and are loaded with the following software: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Java, Flash, RealPlayer, QuickTime, Silverlight. Technical details, circulation information, and the library’s device lending policies can be found on the Library FAQ.

The science and engineering libraries are holding a series of workshops during Welcome Week that can help you get the most out of freely available as well as Berkeley subscribed resources. Workshops include:
- E-resources: go beyond Google to get the scholarly materials you need

- GIS: an introduction to Geographic Information Systems and mapping tools
- Data management: the best ways to create a data management plan, create, store, backup, and share your data

New Library website
The new UC Berkeley Library website goes live on Tuesday, August 12. The website will remain at the same URL, http://lib.berkeley.edu. New features include faster and easier access to study room reservation systems and library locations and hours.
As part of the Library website redesign the Engineering Library website will also have an updated look. As of Tuesday, August 12, the new URL for the Engineering Library will be http://lib.berkeley.edu/libraries/engineering-library. Our old URLs will redirect you to the new website.
We encourage you to use the “Give us feedback” link to help us make the website better!
New Study Room Reservation System
Need a group study room? Check out the Engineering Library’s new study room reservation system! The new system features a more user-friendly design and easier navigation between available rooms across the UC Berkeley Libraries.
Helpful information about the Engineering Library’s study rooms:
- Rooms include white boards and LCD monitors with laptop hookups
- Reservations can be made up to one week in advance
- Maximum of 2 hours can be reserved per person per day, for a maximum of 6 hours per week
- Reservations must be made with your @berkeley.edu email address
- You must confirm your reservation via an email link in order to complete your booking
- There is no food allowed in the Engineering Library

Be the first to get a sneak peak at the new UC Berkeley Library website!
We are looking for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and lecturers to sit down with us for 30 minutes for user testing of the new website. Testing will take place at Doe Library. Volunteers get a $15 gift card to FSM Cafe in return for their time. New Resource Alert: OnePetro
The UC Berkeley Library is pleased to announce that we have added OnePetro to our ever growing collection of online resources for faculty, staff, and students.
OnePetro is a searchable database of publications in the oil and gas exploration and production industry and includes conference papers and journal articles from the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), the American Petroleum Institute (API), NACE International, the International Society of Polar and Offshore Engineers (ISOPE), and more. While the UC Berkeley Library has provided print access to publications from these societies in the past, OnePetro provides an easy one-stop shop online for instant access to the papers you need.

New content in Web of Knowledge
UC’s subscription to the Web of Knowledge now features more content than ever before! New databases available for searching on the Web of Knowledge platform include:
- Book Citation Index (2005-present)
- Conference Proceedings Citation Index (1990-present)
- Current Contents Connect (1998-present)
- Current Chemical Reactions (1985-present)
- Data Citation Index (1900-present)
- Derwent Innovations Index (1993-present)
- Index Chemicus (1993-present)
Many users will be familiar with searching Web of Knowledge in order to access Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports, BIOSIS, and Inspec. Of particular interest for science and engineering researchers may be the Data Citation Index, which allows users to discover research data, including data studies, data sets from a wide range of international data repositories and connect them with the scientific literature to track data citation. In addition, the Derwent Innovations Index gives UC researchers a new way to search and cite patent information.

Expanded Springer Ebook Access
The UC Berkeley Library has expanded our Springer Ebook collection to include titles published prior to 2005. Collections purchased include chemistry and materials science, earth & environmental science, engineering, mathematics & statistics, and physics & astronomy. Springer ebooks are fully searchable and available for download as chapter PDFs via the Springer platform.
