We are looking for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and lecturers to sit down with us for 30 minutes for user testing of the new website. Testing will take place at Doe Library. Volunteers get a $15 gift card to FSM Cafe in return for their time. TAIR access for UCB researchers
Access to The Arabidopsis Information Resource (TAIR) after it becomes a subscription resource on April 1, 2014, will be paid on behalf of all UC Berkeley researchers by the Marian Koshland Bioscience and Natural Resources Library.
As its name implies, TAIR maintains a regularly updated database on Arabidopsis thaliana, a model organism for plant evolution, development and genetics. Data available from TAIR includes the complete genome sequence of A. thaliana, along with gene structure, gene product information, gene expression, DNA and seed stocks, genome maps, genetic and physical markers, and publications. TAIR also includes data analysis tools, as well as information for and about the Arabidopsis research community.
BIOBASE: PROTEOME & HGMD
UCB patrons can now access two BIOBASE databases: BIOBASE provides curated biological databases and software for life sciences which allow identification of relations critical to drug and biomarker discovery. PROTEOME includes specialized tools for gene set analysis and pathyway visualization, search for an individual gene or a set of genes, diseaseses and drugs. The Bioscience and Natural Resources Library is hosting BIOBASE tranining sessions on Thursday, April 10, 2014 in the Library Training Room. PROTEOME will be covered from 9:30 – 11:00am; HGMD training will start at 12:00 – 1:30pm. No sign ups are necessary. |
Springer Biomedical and Life Sciences Book Archive
The science libraries of UC Berkeley have recently purchased the Springer Biomedical and Life Sciences Book Archive, more than 7,500 e-book titles whose original copyrights date from 1910 through 2004. The collection includes books in the subject areas of agriculture, biochemistry, cell biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, forestry, microbiology, neuroscience, plant sciences, and soil science, among others.
These e-books join the more than 20,000 previously purchased Springer Book Archive e-book titles in five additional subject collections:
- Chemistry and Materials Science
- Earth and Environmental Science
- Engineering
- Mathematics and Statistics
- Physics and Astronomy
Springer eBooks are available as cross-platform-compatible PDFs at both book and chapter level. Springer also offers the MyCopy print on demand option for most English-language titles.
The books can be accessed by searching Oskicat, or by searching or browsing the Springer e-book website.

California Digital Library has purchased a one-year trial to Scopus, a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and more, with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.
Come try it out! No registration required. Use the training room PCs or bring your own laptop.
Scopus contains over 50 million records in all disciplines, with more than half the content originating from outside North America.
- Indexes over 21,000 journals, conference proceedings, trade publications, and book series in sciences, technology, medicine, arts, humanities, and social sciences
- Includes over 5.3 million conference papers
- Includes 100% of the Medline database
- Has more than 23 million patents from 5 patent offices
- Includes citations back to 1823
- Cited references available from 1996 forward
Use the Journal Analyzer tool to compare journals on a variety of parameters:
- scientific prestige (SJR)
- citation impact (SNIP)
- number of times a journal has been cited
- number of articles published per year
- percent of articles not cited per year
- percent of published articles that are reviews
Scopus also integrates with Embase: Records in Embase with citing articles will have a link to open Scopus so one can view the citing articles. Also, Scopus is considered an essential database to search when conducting systematic reviews
UC-wide access to Scopus ends on December 31, 2014; at that time each campus will decide whether or not to subscribe.
Web of Knowledge interface changes
Web of Knowledge databases including Web of Science, BIOSIS Previews, CAB Abstracts and Global Health, Data Citation Index, Inspec, and Zoological Record deployed a new user interface beginning January 12, 2014. Among the changes:
- The default search page now features a single search box for the Topic field; as before, the field can be changed and search boxes for additional fields can be added
- Web of Science cited reference searches must now be selected from a drop-down menu above the search box
- The UC-eLinks icon to access full text is now found under a button labelled “Full Text” on the search results and article record pages
- Search details are visible after clicking on a link labelled “More” under the “You searched for” heading on the search results page
- An “Add to Marked List” button replaces the former icon on the search results page
- A “Create Citation Alert” link and icon replace the former button on article pages
